Why retainers matter

Did you know that teeth continue moving throughout life ?

Our teeth, like all body parts, change and move over time. Long term studies show that it's very normal for lower incisor teeth to crowd over time. Further investigations show that even with wisdom teeth removed, lower incisors still crowd over time.

In otherwords, we expect your teeth to move after orthodontic treatment and retainers are essential in preventing that unwanted movement.

How to wear your retainers

Wearing your retainer as instructed by your Orthoclinic team is important. Teeth can move throughout life, so getting this stage right will ensure that your beautiful orthodontic result stays that way. Here's how to wear them.

FAQs

Have a question about life after orthodontics: retainer wear and care?

  • Either worn and removable, or fixed in behind teeth, a retainer stops your teeth from moving, keeping them in their ideal position.

  • Yes. Teeth move throughout life (whether you’ve had orthodontic treatment or not) and need to be reminded where to be. We commonly use a clear removable retainer for your top teeth, eventually worn just at nighttime, and a glued wire on the inside of your bottom from teeth.

  • Most patients wear their retainer full-time at first, then move to nights only. To keep your teeth from drifting, we generally recommend wearing a retainer at night long-term — it’s the best way to protect your result for life.

    In otherwords, forever.

  • Teeth can move after orthodontic treatment, even after wisdom tooth removal. While wisdom tooth removal, might help maintain your orthodontic result a little, it is not as important as routinely wearing your orthodontic retainers.

  • A nightly removable retainer (coloured or clear) can be brushed daily with a toothbrush and liquid soap/detergent. Toothpaste can be too abrasive over time. Periodically soak your retainer with a cleaning tablet (once a week). A home ultrasonic jewellery/retainer cleaner can be cheaply purchased to periodically clean for tougher stains that are stubborn.

  • Long term studies show us that bottom front teeth move during adulthood and are most likely to crowd later. At Orthoclinic, we like to place a wire on the inside of your bottom front teeth, such that you don’t have to remember to wear it, and we find that if the bottom teeth stay straight, the rest of your smile will generally stay straight too. This wire is designed to remain in place forever.

Cleaning the wire is simple. Brushing it as a part of your daily routine is the main method so remember to brush on the inside of your bottom front teeth. It can also be flossed above the wire, and pikster brush under. We show you how.
